Hello Northeastern Ohio! For many crying for a more political or activist voice, Stonewall-Cleveland is here. This is my first offical article as the president of Stonewall-Cleveland, the North Coast's lesbian and gay men's political organization. We appreciate the Chronicle's providing Stonewall-Cleveland this space.

Support our gay and lesbian troops: The U.S. military is imposing a "stop-loss" policy regarding lesbian and gay soldiers in the Gulf. Lesbian and gay soldiers are required to fight for the U.S., but when the war is over they will be dishonorably discharged. Stonewall opposes the U.S. military's treatment of lesbian and gay soldiers. Stonewall is sponsoring a public march and rally to express our outrage on March 23 at 11:30 a.m., starting at the Federal Building, East 9th St. at Lakeside. Join us in support of our sisters and brothers fighting in the Gulf. For more information contact Keith at 281-9205 or Karen at 1-262-1927.

Legislative news: The good news: in February, members of Stonewall and the Center met with Cleveland's Community Relations Board to discuss expanding civil rights protections to lesbian and gay men in housing, employment and public accommodations. The iron in Cleveland is hot! We need your help on numerous levels to lobby, educate, and support this effort. In March, we are meeting with representatives from Edgewater Park to discuss the recent arrests... watch for more details.

The bad news: Stonewall was a visible force in the unsuccessful Wooster housing referendum campaign. A big thank you to those Stonewall members who tromped door-to-door.

Membership: We currently have over 400 members from all over the Ohio North Coast, who joined at our charter membership rate. We know there are many more of us out there. Join the growing political voice or make your voice strong by renewing your membership. Contact Paul for more information at 289-1180.

The Cleveland Public Theatre Performance Art Festival is presenting performance artists from North America through the month of March. This is the largest festival of performance art in the world, with 18 artists chosen by a national panel who willperform March 7 through 24.

Then, all other artists who applied are scheduled to appear at the Performance Open on March 28 through 31. This is an uninhibited, uncensored, unbelievable four-day weekend of 40 artists from 17 cities, with eight performances a night.

The Cleveland Performance Art Festival is in its fourth year and has brought many controversial artists from around the world, including Karen Finley, Tim Miller, Holly Hughes, and Annie Sprinkle. This year will be no exception.

Artists of special interest to gay men and lesbians include Reno (March 7 and 9), Linda Mancini (March 14 and 16), Lawrence Steger (March 14 and 16), Nancy O. Reilly (March 15 and 17), William Pope.L

(March 21 and 23), Frank Green (March 21 and 23), and Patrick Burton (March 31). These performers will touch on areas of sexual identity, feminism, AIDS, romantic relationships, art and intimacy.

Regardless of the performer, if you respect the arts and enjoy cutting edge sarcasm and dramatic exploration of artistic and personal issues, this festival will provide a healthy dose of entertainment and commentary. If your sensibilities are easily offended, maybe you should sit this one out. The vice squad has made visits to this festival in the past; the artists are unpredictable and powerful.

Performances are at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday through Sunday from March 7 through 31. Ticket prices are $8.00 general admission, $5.00 for students and seniors. Discounts are available for groups and those with financial hardship.

The Cleveland Public Theatre is located at 6415 Detroit Avenue, at the intersection of West 65th Street. Call 631-2727 for reservations and the complete schedule.▼

Revolution can be fun: Stonewall is sponsoring an exclusive showing of Before Stonewall on April 15 at Cleveland Cinematheque. Activists are always taking gambles, so join us for a Casino Night on May 11 at the Rascal House on Euclid across from CSU. Also mark your calendars for June 14, Stonewall Political Reception as part of the 1991 Pride celebration. For more information about any of these events contact John at 975-2056.

For your information: No Northeastern Ohio city prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Only two Ohio cities have such laws. Yellow Springs has the strongest laws affording protection in employment, housing, credit, education, and public accomodations. Columbus affords minimal protection in housing and public accomodations. State of Ohio, Cuyahoga County, Yellow Springs, and Columbus public employees are also protected under statements of policy issued by public officals.

Stonewall continues to meet on the second Monday of every month, 7:30 p.m., at the Center. The meetings are open to the public, so come out wherever you are! ▼

picks program development head

Stonewall Union of Columbus has announced the selection of Christopher Wagner as the agency's new program development director. Wagner has been filling the same position on an interim basis since the beginning of December. "Stonewall Union has undergone a lot of growth in our ten years, and it has branched off into a lot of directions. The time has come to do some pruning and shaping, and that's what Chris's job will entail," Stonewall president Russ Stalk said.

The position, conceived in the summer of 1990, is funded by a grant from the Needmor Fund in Boulder, Colorado.

Wagner's duties will include developing new programs and projects as well as refining existing ones to support the gay and lesbian community.

In the years since its founding in 1981 as a response to discrimination facing gay and lesbian people, Stonewall Union has evolved from an activist organization to one that also provides community service. Its mission is to empower gay men and lesbians to foster a sense of community through educational programs, referral networks, and advocacy. Its largest event, the annual Gay and Lesbian Pride March Continued on page 19
